As soon as I saw the name of this I had to try it. I’m a huge chocolate and red wine fan, so the opportunity to try both of at the same time was too good to resist.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Dense, bright and deep red

Nose:  Rich cocoa, coffee and a hint of liquorice

On the palate: Turkish delight, chocolate, red and black cherries, vanilla, red plum and butterscotch

Varietal Composition: Pinotage

By: Darling Cellars

Style: Moreish & Fruity

Vintage: 2017

Origin: South Africa

Value Rating:   3 / 5

Where to buy it: Lamprecht International

Price: $12-15

Score: 90 (Decanter World Wine Awards)

Drink: Now

Should you try? I like it and for the price point it’s hard to complain although I’ve seen mixed reviews on this one. I tried this as a party where it was paired with pasta, pizzas and seafood dishes – all of which were rich in oil and garlic, which worked well. If I buy this one again, I’ll likely keep it as a party wine and serve with salty snacks or sweet snacks. I’m guessing chocolate lovers will particularly enjoy this one as it pairs really well with a piece of good quality dark chocolate!
